Summer break is a fun time for kids, but also a time when the risk of cavities can increase. Which is why we want to offer children’s dentistry to help kids avoid tooth decay and enjoy better oral health. In today’s blog, your Omaha, NE, dentist talks about the benefits of children’s dentistry and keeping little smiles safe all summer long!
Starting with Your Child’s Checkup
When was the last time your child had a dental checkup? Starting at around age two, we want to see your kids every six months for a route in dental exam. During this visit, we can talk to them about their oral hygiene habits, the importance of a good routine, and also examine their teeth and gums with digital x-rays and intraoral cameras, so we can make a diagnosis with precision and accuracy. Our team can then create a treatment plan to address any concerns we find, and your kids can become accustomed to the dentist so they look forward to their next visit! In the same visit, we will also clean the teeth to remove all layers of harmful plaque and tartar, which helps reduce cavity risk and fight the onset of bad breath and teeth stains.
Cavity Prevention with Children’s Dentistry
Our team can also provide preventive treatments to help lower the risk of cavities in little smiles. For example, as part of the exam portion, we can apply fluoride to the teeth in a varnish form. This naturally-occurring mineral can strengthen the outer enamel to make the onset of cavities less likely, and application only takes a few seconds. Kids then just avoid food and drink for about a half hour as it cures.
Children sometimes have trouble reaching the rear teeth when they brush and floss, which leaves the molars vulnerable to tooth decay. But with dental sealants, we can apply an acrylic coating to these teeth so food and drink particles cannot be trapped between them, lowering the risk of cavities. They can even stay in place for up to ten years in some cases! The application again only takes a few seconds, and kids just need to stay clear of food and drink for 30 minutes.
Better Care from Home
Our team will also talk about proper brushing and flossing habits, so kids can better protect their smiles from home! We also recommend cutting back on the amount of sugar in their foods and drinks, and making sure they are taking time to care for their smiles each day.
