Dental Emergencies

Compassionate Care in a Dental Emergency

A dental emergency can be frightening when it first occurs, but as soon as the surprise wears off, the need to seek treatment becomes immediate. For example, if your tooth fractures or breaks suddenly, or if it’s knocked out completely, then the sooner you seek treatment, the better. To accommodate most dental emergencies, we can often schedule same-day and after-hour appointments to make sure you receive the treatment you need, when you need it.

What to do in an emergency

  • If you have something stuck between your teeth, try to dislodge it by brushing or flossing gently. Never stick a sharp object near your sensitive gum tissue.
  • If your tooth breaks, carefully pick up the broken piece. Place it in milk and bring it with you to your appointment.
  • If your tooth gets knocked out, pick it up by the crown. If possible, place the tooth back in your mouth and bite down gently to hold it in place. If you cannot do this, keep the tooth moist by storing it in milk and bring it with you to your appointment.
  • If your dental restoration (i.e., dental filling or crown) comes off, then you should schedule an appointment with Dr. Pietrok or Dr. St. Germain as soon as possible.

Possible treatment options

During your emergency visit, we’ll carefully examine your teeth, gums, oral tissues, and more to determine the exact nature and extent of your emergency. Depending on your specific needs and preferences, we can custom-design an appropriate treatment to restore your tooth, prevent any further damage, and/or address complications such as tooth infection. If necessary, we may consult with you to plan an appropriate restorative treatment for replacing any teeth you may have lost.
