Teeth-Whitening

An Easy Way to a Brighter Smile

Keeping your teeth clean and healthy with good hygiene and regular preventive care is an excellent way of preserving their natural, beautiful appearance. However, it isn’t always a guarantee against stains showing up on your teeth from exposure to things like food, beverages, and more. Fortunately, as long as you’ve kept your teeth healthy, we can often effectively erase the stains with professional cosmetic teeth-whitening. For optimal convenience, the procedure can be performed during a single visit to our office or from the comfort of your own home.

How teeth-whitening works

Teeth-whitening treatment consists of a safe but powerful whitening agent that your dentist applies to the surfaces of your teeth. The topical agent gently breaks up the deposits of bacteria and molecules that have accumulated on your tooth enamel, but doesn’t cause any harm to the enamel itself. Typically, the gel takes about 10 days of daily application to completely erase your teeth stains and brighten their structures. However, we can stimulate the gel to work in just over an hour if you need a brighter smile faster.

Customized treatment options

Depending on your specific needs and preferences, we can design a teeth-whitening treatment that suits you best. For example, we can custom-design a set of trays that fit comfortably and precisely over your teeth and allow you to apply the professional-strength gel at home. The treatment consists of wearing the trays and gel for 1-2 hours a day, and you can choose the time that’s most convenient for you.

If you choose in-office treatment, then we’ll apply the gel to your teeth’s surfaces and stimulate it with a special light. This accelerates the stain removal and teeth-brightening process, allowing us to complete your treatment in just over an hour.

What if teeth-whitening doesn’t work?

Before recommending teeth-whitening, we’ll first carefully examine your teeth and diagnose their stains to determine if it’s your best treatment option. Because it’s a topical treatment, teeth-whitening is most appropriate for extrinsic (external) stains that develop on your tooth enamel. If the discoloration is intrinsic (internal), then it has developed underneath the semi-translucent enamel and will not respond to teeth-whitening. Instead, we may suggest a more involved treatment, such as cosmetic tooth bonding or porcelain veneers, to restore your smile’s healthy, youthful appearance.
