Halloween does often bring up visions of buckets of candy and floors littered with empty chocolate wrappers. But you don’t have to hand out sugar-laden treats to make the neighborhood kids squeal with excitement this year. There are plenty of children’s dentist-approved tricks to providing great Halloween treats that won’t wreak havoc on young smiles. And don’t worry; it doesn’t mean you have to hand out toothbrushes, either. Here are some fun alternatives to sweets that will still elicit lots of happy Trick-or-Treat smiles!
Think Outside the Big Bag of Candy
Rather than stocking up on candies, consider small toys, games, puzzles or other little “prizes” that are still lots of fun, but without any of that potentially cavity-causing sugar. You don’t have to spend a fortune, either, to go with an alternative to candy. Check local dollar stores, discount party chains or order items online leading up to Halloween.
Great, kid-approved “treats” include:
- Stickers or temporary tattoos
- Small rubber bouncy balls
- Glow sticks, bracelets or necklaces
- Spooky gifts, like plastic vampire fangs or inexpensive spider rings
- Halloween pencils and erasers
If You Want to Give Something Edible, Just Skip the Sugar
Since the kids will already have plenty of sweet treats, give them something else to eat, preferably something with some nutritional punch, like no-sugar added applesauce or fruit cups, small boxes of raisins, or low-sodium crackers.
Or, you could help quench the thirsts they’ve worked up doing all that walking, by supplying a healthy beverage like mini bottles of water or no-added-sugar fruit juice boxes.
